Parker County school ignoring Texas Governor's mask mandate

In Parker County, one school district is completely ignoring the statewide mask mandate despite the spread of the coronavirus there.

Despite Governor Abbott's executive order making wearing face covering masks mandatory in all public buildings in counties with more than 20 active COVID-19 cases, Peaster ISD Superintendent Lance Johnson had made them optional in his Parker County school district.

The Texas Tribune reports at least two parents filed complaints to the Peaster school board and to the TEA, but the school board refused to consider them and the TEA took no action.

Parker County Emergency Management Coordinator Sean Hughes says he has tried urging Johnson to enforce the mask mandate, to no avail.

Hughes says since Abbott's executive order prevents law enforcement from detaining violators, enforcing the mask mandate is impossible.

KRLD has reached out to Johnson, the president of the Peaster ISD board of trustees and the TEA, but none have returned our calls and emails.
