Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into the Dallas Police Department’s immigration policies, less than a month after Interim Police Chief Michael Igo faced criticism from prominent conservatives.
The controversy began when Igo told the Dallas City Council that the department does not assist federal agencies in detaining individuals solely for immigration violations. Following a backlash, Igo held a press conference to clarify his statement, emphasizing that the department would cooperate with any agency in arresting individuals for criminal offenses, regardless of their immigration status.
In a statement, Paxton asserted that local governments cannot disregard state or federal immigration laws. His office has been investigating several Texas cities over similar concerns.
