For the second year in a row, pets at the Fort Worth animal shelter will get their own Thanksgiving feast.
"We thought it would be a fun way to celebrate and also give the shelter pets something special," says Jessica Brown, the shelter's superintendent who came up with the idea last year.
Last year, donors purchased enough food to feed all 300-plus dogs and cats at the shelter; and this year, they came through again.
"We had an overwhelming amount of donations coming in. People were really supportive this year and excited to see it happen again," says Brown. "We should be able to give meals to all the pets in the shelter, which is a little over 300."
And thanks to those donors, the dogs will eat like kings.
"They're going to get a little bit of turkey, some green beans, mashed potatoes, some pumpkin," says Brown; "and then, of course, we'll top it off with a few dog treats as well."
The cats will also get their own special Thanksgiving meal.
"The cats are going to be eating a special 'Thanksgiving Day Dinner' cat food that was purchased for them by some of our donors," Brown says.
Whereas some people donated the food, others will be busy over the next two days donating their time to serve the feast to the shelter pets.
"We'll have about 25 volunteers there today that are going to be in stations prepping all the meals," says Brown, "and then we'll pass them out tomorrow on Thanksgiving morning."
The Fort Worth Animal Shelter reminds you that all pets are up for adoption, and adoption fees are currently waived.
