Lewisville police safely destroyed a pipe bomb Monday after a resident discovered the device while metal detecting at a popular swimming area on Lake Lewisville.

The explosive was found at Lake Park along the shoreline near the frisbee golf course and swim area, where families and children frequently gather. Lewisville resident Mike Reiter spotted the suspicious package and alerted authorities. Officers with the Lewisville Police Department responded, examined the item, and called in the Denton Police and Fire Departments bomb squad for assistance.

Bomb technicians confirmed it was a pipe bomb and destroyed the device on site. The area was temporarily secured but has since reopened to the public. No injuries were reported.

According to the Lewisville Police Department, similar devices have been used recently at the lake to kill fish for an easy catch, a practice that is illegal. Police emphasized that such activity poses serious safety risks in a recreational area.

Reiter shared his concerns in the City of Lewisville Facebook group, writing that he had held “a freaking bomb in my hand that one of you might have made and left behind” in a spot where kids swim.
