A mother gives birth in a Plano hospital parking lot and then takes off.
It happened last month when officers got a welfare call to the parking lot of Baylor Scott & White Medical Center where a woman who was about to give birth attempted to order an Uber to leave the facility. Officers persuaded the Uber driver to cancel the trip and the woman gave birth to the child right there in the hospital parking lot.
Hospital officials then rushed the woman and newborn inside to their neonatal intensive care unit and police were told that had they not acted, it's likely the baby would not have survived. When an officer returned to the hospital to check on the mother and her baby they found that the mother had abandoned the newborn, despite medical advice to stay.
Child Protective Services assumed custody of the newborn and police say the woman claimed to have been physically assaulted by a man with an extensive criminal history, whom they believe may be affiliated with a local gang.
