A Plano man is going to prison for decades on a conviction on sexual assault of a child charges.
Prosecutors say Behailu Birkie had access to the victim for ten years beginning when she was eleven. The jury convicted him of sexually abusing the girl not only in North Texas but in another state and in Birkie's native Ethiopia.
The Collin County District Attorney says the girl moved to Plano where she lived from the age of 15 to 18. In fact, the abuse continued until she turned 21 when she reported what happened to medical personnel in Tampa who, in turn, told the police there about it.
When Tampa detectives learned about the Plano connection they contacted Plano PD. Detectives from both departments compared notes to make sure they got a conviction.
Birkie has been sentenced to 40 years.
