PLANO (1080 KRLD)- Plano police will no longer make arrests for possession of small amounts of Marijuana.
Police Chief Ed Drain has issued the order, saying his officers will not make an arrest for possession of two ounces of marijuana or less. The only exception would be in the case of someone being arrested anyway for a weapons offense.
Instead of an arrest, officers will issue Class C misdemeanor citations. Part of the reason is the cost of small possession arrests which require expensive tests to verify the substance really is marijuana.
Another reason is the frequent racial disparity where African-Americans are arrested at a rate out of proportion to their share of the population.
