ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD - Police are releasing more information about a 4-year-old killed at an apartment complex on Washington Drive this morning.
Police say Messiah Taplin was shot by someone inside his own home while ringing in the new year.
"We have a man identified … I don't know his exact relationship except that he resides in the home with the child," says Lt. Chris Cook with the Arlington Police Department. "He claims he was dancing, celebrating New Year's, when the gun accidentally went off and struck the child in the head."
Lt. Cook says the child was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 1:15 a.m.
Police say the suspect in the case originally tried to say the bullet came from outside the apartment, but that was quickly determined to be a lie. No charges have been filed at this time, but the suspect is in police custody.
