1 officer killed, 3 wounded in standoff with gunman near Lubbock

A West Texas man is now in custody accused in yesterday's shooting death of a Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputy killed in an hours-long stand-off that ended overnight.

SWAT team commander Sergeant Josh Bartlett was among five officers wounded when a man opened fire in the city of Levelland, about a half-hour west of Lubbock.

The stand-off began Thursday afternoon when a neighbor called police saying a man named Omar Soto Chavira was walking around outside with a firearm.

Levelland officers arrived and Chavira opened fire. They, in turn, called in the SWAT Team from Lubbock County and as they were setting up there was more gunfire wounding Bartlett and four other officers. Bartlett was killed.

Another officer went through surgery and is in critcial but stable condition. The other officers were treated and released.

Chavira was taken to the hospital to get checked out but remains in custody.
