A Ponder High School senior is in critical condition after being seriously injured in a snow sledding accident Monday, school officials confirmed.

The student, identified by the district as Caden Nowicki, remains in the intensive care unit at a North Texas hospital as his family and community continue to rally around him following the incident amid hazardous conditions left by the recent winter storm.

Ponder Independent School District Superintendent James Hill said the district is accepting food gift card donations to support the student’s family, with collection points at the high school’s front office and athletic office once school reopens.

Texas has seen a rise in sledding-related injuries in recent days as icy, snow-covered streets and lawns have prompted outdoor winter activity despite dangerous conditions reported by local weather officials.
