A multistate listeria outbreak tied to ready-to-eat pasta meals has sickened 27 people and killed six, federal officials said.
The Food and Drug Administration reported that two additional deaths and seven new illnesses were recorded in three states since its last update on Sept. 25. Twenty-five of those sickened have been hospitalized, and one pregnancy-associated case resulted in fetal loss. The last reported illness occurred Oct. 16, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The outbreak involves products sold at retailers including Albertsons, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts and Kroger. Cases have been reported in California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington.
FDA and CDC officials are investigating whether other products may be contaminated. Customers are urged not to eat recalled meals and to either discard them or return them to stores. Although stores have pulled the items from shelves, the meals may still be in home refrigerators or freezers.
