Get ready to flap those wings, North Texas - the Red Bull Flugtag is returning to Levy Event Plaza at Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas on Saturday, Sept. 13, from noon to 5 p.m.
Teams of five - one daring pilot and four trusty crew - will compete with homemade, human-powered flying contraptions launched off a 22-foot ramp into the water below. Distance? That’s one score. Creativity and showmanship? That’s twice the buzz.
Flugtag is free to the public (no tickets required), but VIP "Flight Club" seating is available starting July 18. The event promises aerial antics, musical acts, interactive zones, and a splashy performance from the Red Bull Air Force skydivers.
Local officials say the event has been 12 years in the making - a return that's expected to draw over 40,000 spectators and lift the spirit (and perhaps altitude) of our community.
What even is Flugtag?
Flugtag (pronounced FLOOG-tahg, German for "flying day") is a wild, over-the-top event created by Red Bull where teams build homemade, human-powered flying machines and launch them off a 22-foot-high platform - usually into a body of water.
The goal?
Fly as far as possible… or at least crash in style.
Teams are judged on three things:
Distance flown (or flopped)
Creativity of their flying machine
Showmanship during their pre-flight performance
It’s like a cross between an airshow, a comedy skit, and a pool party - with a big splash of engineering gone rogue.
