The Brazos River was expected to crest about four feet above flood stage Wednesday afternoon. Parker County Emergency Management has ordered evacuations for neighborhoods around Horseshoe Bend.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter at Spring Creek Baptist Church:
100 Spring Creek Rd
Weatherford, TX 76087.
The Red Cross says just two people stayed at the shelter overnight, but nine had come through Wednesday morning asking for help.
"We are feeding people, giving out lodging as well as referrals to partner agencies that can help them replace things and repair things," says the Red Cross' Betsy Cornette. "We can also help with financial assistance."
She says others may stop in with questions once they are able to return to their home and survey damage, so the shelter will stay open. Parker County Emergency Management says the Brazos River should drop below flood stage Thursday evening.
The Red Cross had cots set up in a gym at the church. They were also serving hot meals and could provide snacks to people.
Counseling is also available. Volunteers could also refer people to medical services and organizations that can help with clean-up and repairs.
"All of this is open 24 hours a day. There is no time they cannot come in. They are welcome any time, and we are just here to help in any way we can," Cornette says.
Volunteers also have pet food and toys for pets and kids.
"We try to meet people on their level and what needs they have because everybody has different needs," Cornette says.
"It's emotional," one woman who was getting help at the shelter said. "We're out of our house. We can't even get close to it because the water is still so far up. It's going to be days before we can even get back in there."
She says Parker County sheriff's deputies have streets blocked to prevent looting. She says deputies have been checking people's identification before letting them in.
"We had to pack up and move it to higher ground," she says. "We've been gone two days now, so it is stressful."
Donations can be made to the Red Cross here.
