For 67 years, Dallas-based non-profit Ability Connection has been enriching the lives of people with disabilities.

Primarily it's helped family members care for loved ones with intellectual and developmental disabilities at on-site locations across the area.

Now Ability Connection is launching a new "In-Home Respite Program."

Through the program, families can apply for a quarterly, $100 stipend from Ability Connection to aid in hiring a respite caregiver while the family recharges or takes care of other obligations. How the family uses the respite time and stipend is entirely up to them.

"They get to pick who they want (a family member, a neighbor, a friend) and they get to decide what they pay a person," said Jim Hanophy, Ability Connection President and CEO. "We just wanted people to be in control and get relief when they want."

In addition to the stipend, Ability Connection will also provide families with guidance to help vet potential caregivers and ensure proper care of their loved one.

"People do not have to be receiving services from us or any other provider in order to avail themselves of this opportunity," Hanophy said. "So we certainly hope that we reach (new) people.
