RICHARDSON (1080 KRLD)- Just weeks before lifting its mask mandate, the Richardson ISD is reporting a slight rise in active COVID-19 cases.

This week, the district is reporting 39 active student cases. Last week, that number was only 31. The total number of cases among Richardson ISD students is nearly 1,400.

But these numbers are still a far cry from what the RISD was dealing with at the beginning of the semester, when more than 500 students were already testing positive two weeks into the school year. In October, the District announced that two people, a student and a staff member , had died from complications of COVID-19.

Since then, the total number of cases reported in the district has been steadily declining.

Masks are on their way out, as well. Older students already have the option to wear them or not, and district leaders are planning to lift the mask mandate for elementary school students on Dec. 17. That means masks will be optional at all district facilities.
