In the Rockwall County town of Fate, they are mourning the death of a beloved school crossing guard who was killed in a freak accident this morning.
Crossing guard Melissa Williams was on duty this morning, doing what she had done most school days for the last 14 years helping students at the Miss May Vernon elementary school.
But this morning seconds after dropping a student off a parent suffered a medical emergency that sent her car into the guard. Williams died a short time later.
Department of Public Safety chief Lyle Lombard does not expect any charges.
"We just think it's just a horrible accident," Lombard said. "We feel for the lady that had the medical emergency, and of course [for] the family of the victim and it's juts a horrible situation all the way across for everybody."
Because the crash happened in front of young children, counselors are being made available.
A candlelight vigil is being held tonight at the edge of the school's property.
