Dallas (1080 KRLD)- Texans can stock up on emergency supplies this weekend without having to pay sales tax. The state's sale tax holiday for emergency supplies runs from Saturday, April 24th through Monday, April 26th.
"We just came out of the winter freeze in February where a lot of people unfortunately lost power and heat and water," said Kevin Lyons with the Texas State Comptroller's Office. "Some of the items you can buy this year could have helped with that, and can certainly help with emergencies coming down the road."
The Comptroller's Office is urging Texans to stock up now on items like batteries, flashlights, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors so they will be ready during the next natural disaster.
"You don't know when the next flood or tornado or hurricane may strike. So go ahead and buy those items now. Save some money. And when those emergency events happen...you and your family will be prepared," Lyons said.
The sales tax holiday covers portable generators that cost less than $3,000 along with a wide variety of emergency supplies.
Other items on the list include hurricane shutters, emergency ladders, batteries, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, weather radios, first aid kits, flashlights, lanterns and tarps.
