Johnson had endorsed state Rep. Jasmine Crockett who was the top vote getter, but got just below the 50 percent of the vote needed to avoid a runoff.

The next-closest candidate was Jane Hope Hamilton, who has worked on numerous campaigns and once worked as Congressman Marc Veasey's chief of staff.

Nine Democrats and six Republicans were on the ballot.

The Democratic candidate field included Crockett, Arthur Dixon, Hamilton, Vonciel Jones Hill, Keisha Williams-Lankford, Barbara Mallory Caraway, Jessica Mason, Abel Mulugheta, and Roy Williams, Jr.

The Republican side had six more candidates: Lizbeth Diaz, Kelvin Goodwin-Castillo, Dakinya "Kinya" Jefferson, Angeigh J. Roc'ellerpitts, and James Rodgers.
