
The State Fair of Texas is almost three months away but it's not too soon to fire up the deep fryers.
The semi-finalists have been announced in the annual Big Tex Choice Awards, the famous fried food contest held every year to come up with new fair foods.
“They have made it one step closer to the annual Big Texas Choice Awards,” Fair Spokesperson Karissa Condoianis says. “Our internal judging panel will taste, I know it’s a tough job but somebody has to do it, taste all 36 items and they will be scored on a range of things.”
Whether you love savory or sweet, you’re in for a treat this year. After much deliberation in the first round of judging, the scores have been tallied and the results are in; 36 semi-finalists have been named to move forward.
Some of the interesting ones include: Deep-fried lasagna roll; Deep-fried fruit salad; The soul food eggroll which is filled with fried chicken, collared greens and mac-and-cheese; and something called the Southern Fried Chicken and Sweet Potato Pie Waffle Slider.
“When I look at the list this year, I continue to be amazed by the creativity of our State Fair concessionaires.”
Others in the savory contest include: Bayou Bowl; Cajun Lobster Bisque Croquettes; Crispy Dilly Dog; Deep Fried BLT; Deep fried Texas Country Cookout; Dim Sum Loco Burrito; Fried Charcuterie Board; Holy Biscuit; Shaking Beef Salad; Texas Hot Bull Ride; Texas Ranch Hog Wings; Texas Slide; Texas Twosome; and a Turkey Leg Taquito.
On the sweet side: Cha-cha Chata; Crunchberry Shortcake; Deep Fried Buc-ee's; Deep Fried Honey; Deep Fried Praline Cheesecake Eggroll; Doh-muff; Fat Elvis; La Bluebonnet; Peanut Butter Paradise; Raspberry Chipotle Sopapilla Cheesecake; Smoked Bacon Wrapped Cookie Dough Balls; The Ultimate Brownie Monster; Triple Lemon Biss...and others.
“We have become known for our food at the State Fair of Texas” said Condoianis. The finalists will be announced in mid-August.
