Senator John Cornyn is behind legislation that would bar immigrants who support Sharia Law from coming into or staying in the United States.
Sen. Cornyn spoke on the Senate floor saying Sharia Law is the antithesis of what the country stands for.
"We cannot shrink from these ideals by allowing certain individuals to advocate or embrace Sharia Law," Cornyn said. "Nor can we allow advocates for Sharia Law to enter our country and actively work to undermine our constitution."
The 'Ban Outsiders Openly Touting Sharia Law Act' would bar such immigrants from getting benefits such as asylum or a green card.
"Our country was founded on principles of liberty, equality, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech," Cornyn said.
It would also allow the Department of Homeland Security a longer period of time to revoke green cards when they advocate for terrorism.
