Senator John Cornyn is joining another Senate republican introducing a bill to defund and abolish the Cesar Chavez National Monument.
"Not a dime of taxpayer money should be spent on a monument that glorifies a monster like Cesar Chavez, especially when that monument stands quite literally at the scene of some of his alleged crimes," Cornyn said.
The move comes a week after allegations surfaced against the Civil Rights icon involving grooming and sexually abusing girls.
Cornyn introduced the measure along with Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana.
"Monuments are made to celebrate those who should be honored," Cassidy said.
The money would be rerouted to fighting the rape kit backlog.
