Signs honoring fallen officer now on 635 in Mesquite

The Texas Department of Transportation has installed signs designating a portion of 635 between LaPrada Drive and Cartwright Road the Officer Richard Houston II Memorial Highway. Officer Houston was shot and killed in the line of duty on December 3rd, 2021.

"It was a domestic disturbance call," his daughter, Shelby Houston, told state lawmakers earlier this year. "He arrived in full uniform with lights on. Within seconds the man got out of the car and shot him three times."

State Representative Victoria Neave Criado filed a bill to re-name a portion of Interstate 635 in his honor, and it was approved by the Texas Legislature this spring.

"By establishing a portion of Highway 635 in honor of my dad, my prayer would be that those who travel upon it would remember him," said Shelby Houston. "Surely to remember his sacrifice, but ultimately to remember the life he lived - because it's worth of honor and respect."

The new signs cost just over $40,000. Money for them was raised by the Mesquite Police Association Charities.

"Everyone passing through the City of Mesquite will see these signs and know about Officer Houston's sacrifice," said Mesquite Police Association Charities President Officer Bruce Sales.

"Our goal all along has been to have the signage installed by the second anniversary date of his end of watch. We appreciate the way the community showed their support for Officer Houston's legacy and service."
