The family of Atatiana Jefferson has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of her young nephew, who witnessed her murder back on October 12, 2019.

Amber Carr is suing on behalf of her then-eight-year-old son Zion, who was at his aunt's house on the night she was shot dead by then-Officer Aaron Dean.

Dean, former Police Chief Ed Kraus, former Mayor Betsy Price and the City of Fort Worth are all named as defendants in the federal suit.

Among other things, the suit claims that the Fort Worth Police Department has had a long history of officers using excessive force, particularly on people of color.

The lawsuit does not specify how much money Carr is seeking.

Neither the police department nor the city had any comment, citing the pending litigation.

Dean, meanwhile, remains free on bond as he awaits his murder trial.
