A South Oak Cliff High School football player is in custody after police say he shot a teammate just hours after the team’s state championship victory Saturday night.
Authorities say the suspect, an 18-year-old student-athlete identified as Xavier Mayfield, was arrested Sunday and charged in connection with the shooting, which happened after the celebration of the team’s win. Police have not released details about where the shooting occurred or what led up to it, and the condition of the injured teammate has not been made public.
The incident comes after South Oak Cliff capped a championship season with a state title, a moment that had been widely celebrated by the school and community. Officials have not said whether the shooting was connected to team activities following the game.
Police say the investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
