Southern Nazarene University defensive back Tyler Ulrich, an Azle native, has died after suffering a critical injury during an away football game in Arkansas.
Ulrich’s father, Mark, announced his death in a social media post Thursday. His family remained at his bedside during his hospital stay before sharing the news that he had succumbed to his injuries.
The university previously confirmed Ulrich was in critical condition after the injury during a game against Ouachita Baptist University.
In a statement Thursday, Southern Nazarene University President Keith Newman asked the community to keep Ulrich’s family in their prayers.
The Azle ISD athletic department is also expected to discuss ways to honor Ulrich during the district’s upcoming high school football homecoming game.
