Southwest pilots reject double-time offer to work over holidays, union cites staffing issues

The holiday travel crunch is getting underway and Southwest Airlines is offering employees double-time to work extra hours over the holiday weekend, but reports say the pilots are saying no thank you to that offer.

The offer sounds enticing, double-pay for the holiday. But the pilots have turned that offer down and are willing to work for their premium rate of time and a half.

The reason, Southwest Pilots Association President Casey Murray says, is more of a precident-setting contract issue.

Murray says there were problems with Southwest staffing that the union spotted months ago and brought to the airline's attention.

Southwest did not respond to 1080 KRLD's request to answer questions, instead pointing to a prior statement that flight attendants and cargo workers are taking the double-pay offer to keep passengers moving over the summer holiday season.
