Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home or office space; it’s also the perfect opportunity to declutter your digital world.
Recognizing the necessity for such a holistic approach, Google's Productivity Expert, Laura Mae Martin, has timed the release of her book perfectly. Her new publication, Uptime: A Practical Guide to Personal Productivity and Wellbeing, arrives just as many are looking to refresh their environments and habits.
"I just wanted to share super simple things that people can do, practical tips to be more productive," Martin said during an interview with KRLD's John Liddle.
The analogy Martin uses to manage emails effectively is relatable and straightforward.
"I like to think of email like laundry," Martin said, explaining her method of sorting emails into multiple inboxes similar to organizing laundry into different piles. It’s a strategy that can transform an overflowing inbox into manageable tasks.
Martin also emphasizes the importance of scheduling downtime, which isn't only refreshing but also primes the brain for creativity.
"Studies actually show that we're more creative in our downtime," she pointed out.
The moments of repose are not just breaks but critical for maintaining a healthy and productive mindset, especially in a world where back-to-back meetings have become the norm.
In an age where screen time competes for attention with the real world, Martin suggests giving phones 'bedtimes' as a method to ensure better sleep and personal well-being.
"I'm going to give my phone its own bedroom and its own bedtime. So putting it somewhere that's not near where you sleep," she advised.
This simple decision can lead to a significant improvement in sleep quality and overall life balance.
On the topic of life balance, Martin prefers the term 'blend' over 'balance,' suggesting a more holistic approach to life and work. The idea is to not split oneself into different roles uncomfortably but to integrate them seamlessly.
"You think of yourself as one whole person," Martin elaborated.
