Students at Wilmer-Hutchins High School staged a walkout on Wednesday in protest of gun violence. It marked the first day of class since a shooting injured several students last week.
The demonstration, which began just before lunchtime, saw dozens of students holding signs and chanting as they called for increased safety measures and accountability.
The walkout was triggered by a shooting on April 15, when a 17-year-old suspect entered the school through an unsecured door and opened fire in the hallways, injuring five people, including a teacher. The incident has reignited concerns about campus security, with students and parents demanding immediate action to prevent future tragedies.
In response, Dallas ISD has implemented heightened security measures, including clear backpacks, metal detectors, and additional staffing. However, students expressed frustration, stating that these measures alone are insufficient to address the root causes of violence.
"We understand their pain and anger," said a district spokesperson. "We are committed to creating a safer environment for everyone."
