A crime suspect jumped from a moving Dallas police squad car onto the R.L. Thornton Freeway Saturday night while being transported to jail after briefly gaining control of the vehicle.
The chaotic incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on May 30, 2026, on northbound I-35E near Beckley Avenue in Dallas. According to Dallas police, officers had arrested the suspect earlier in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue. While the officer was transporting him, the suspect somehow took control of the squad car with the officer still inside. The officer quickly regained control of the vehicle, at which point the suspect jumped out onto the busy freeway.
Both the officer and the suspect suffered injuries and were transported to area hospitals by Dallas Fire-Rescue. Their conditions have not been publicly released. The suspect’s name and the original charges have also not been disclosed, as he remains hospitalized.
The Dallas Police Department has opened an internal investigation into the incident. No other vehicles or bystanders were reported involved, and the freeway was not shut down for an extended period.
This unusual event has raised questions about officer safety and procedures during prisoner transport in high-risk situations. Incidents like this are rare but highlight the unpredictable dangers officers face daily while performing routine duties in a major city.
