A suspect and K-9 officer were both killed Thursday in an exchange of gunfire in McKinney, police say. Officers were called to a motel along Highway 75 at White Avenue just before 3 p.m. for a report of another shooting.
When police arrived, they found a 52-year-old woman had been shot in the torso. She was stable when paramedics took her to the hospital.
Police said the suspect then barricaded himself inside a room. SWAT and crisis negotiators reached the person by phone.
"During negotiations, the suspect stated he was going to shoot everyone," McKinney police wrote in a statement.
About half an hour later, they said the suspect came outside and walked down the stairs while "yelling aggressively before walking away from officers."
Police sent a K-9 officer to stop the man, but they say he pulled a gun, leading to officers shooting the suspect.
Police gave first aid to the suspect, but he died at the hospital. The K-9, Azi, was also killed.
McKinney police said there is no ongoing threat to the public, and Texas Rangers will lead the investigation.
