Tarrant Co Sheriff Lieutenant dies of COVID-19

FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - As the sheriff of Tarrant County has beaten COVID, he's mourning the loss of one of his lieutenants from the virus.

Lt. Craig King passed away after a five-week battle against the deadly virus.

"He contracted COVID inside the jail, we believe, and that was in early November," says Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn. "His character in life was, he fought hard he was a hard fighter. He did the same with COVID, but unfortunately he lost his battle on Saturday."

King, a father of four, was a Navy veteran with 17 years experience with the sheriff's office.

Waybourn says King was dedicated to his job.

"He was a man that had a strong work ethic," Waybourn says. "He believed in what he was doing. He believed he answered his calling. And he wanted the people around him to be successful. As he would do what he needed to do to get the mission accomplished."

Waybourn himself battled the coronavirus, and he says it was not easy.

"I went from high temperatures to chills to coughs to headaches," says Waybourn. "I had a few eye issues, (and) fatigue was huge."

Waybourn has since recovered and has returned to duty.
