Those who live in Tarrant County now have no excuse not to get their annual flu shot.
The county is partnering with Albertsons/Tom Thumb and Kroger to provide free flu shots to those who do not have health insurance.
"People who are insured typically can go to any location (such as) a pharmacy and get their free flu shot, because it's covered by insurance," says Tarrant County Public Health Director Vinny Taneja. "But people that are uninsured, a lot of times they go in only to find out that they've got out pay out of pocket anywhere between $25 to $50 for the vaccine."
Taneja says with flu activity traditionally picking up after Thanksgiving, they didn't want anything to stand in anyone's way of getting a flu shot, especially amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
"The idea is that with COVID-19 out there, the healthcare systems are getting burdened," says Taneja, "and we didn't want to have a flu problem as well."
The initiative is a public-private partnership.
"We're paying about $25 per dose administered, and they've got some skin in the game as well -- if it's going to cost more, they're going to come out of pocket on that too," Taeja says.
The free flu shots will be offered through Dec. 30.
