Tarrant County officials are working more closely with federal immigration agents as part of a program that allows sheriff’s deputies to question people under arrest about their immigration status.
If deputies determine a person is in the country illegally, they can hold them on federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers. Attorney Paul Hunker, a former ICE official, told NBC 5 the county currently has about 400 people being held on such detainers and that changes have been made to who qualifies for them.
The partnership is part of an ongoing crackdown on undocumented immigrants in the county.
