This week Texas Governor Greg Abbott repeated there will not be a return to a statewide mask mandate.
The Governor has also reiterated that Texas schoolchildren won't have to we ar a mask. This comes as COVID-19 cases are soaring statewide.
Clay Robison with the Texas State Teachers Association says teachers may be worried, but they know the Governor is not going to change his mind. "Our teachers are prepared to go back to the classrooms. Many of them are concerned about the safety levels in the classrooms and the governor isn't helping."
They are urging all parents and school staffers to wear masks and get vaccinated.
"We realize that children younger than 12 are not eligible for the vaccine which makes it all the more important that people wear a mask in school buildings" said Robison. "Even vaccinated people can get the virus. They usually don't show symptoms or get very sick but they can pass the illness to somebody who is not vaccinated."
He's also urging parents to get their eligible kids the shots.
Robison also notes teachers realize it is important to get back to the classroom. "They performed heroically during the pandemic and undoubtedly the fact that schools were closed last year and we had remote instruction saved lives."
