Teachers planning workshop to help parents explain the election to kids

The non-profit, Teach for America, is holding an online workshop Thursday evening to help kids learn about the election. The event, called "Elections Explained," aims to give families more information about how the process works.

"It is a very complicated process, as I think we all have experienced during this election," says Alissa Schneider, the managing director of collective impact at Teach for America. "It can even be hard for adults to understand."

The workshop is aimed at children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

"The children may not come out with a nuanced view of exactly how elections work, but what we hope is they understand elections are important to their daily lives," Schneider says.

She says the workshop will focus on how local issues can affect kids, how school board elections can change what is taught in classrooms and how local and state elections can lead to changes in school funding.

Schneider says workshops like these aim to spark an interest in politics at a younger age, saying kids who learn about how the system works are more likely to vote when they turn 18.

"It's never too young for kids to start thinking about their country and their civic duty," she says.

The meeting will take place Thursday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Zoom. The seminar is free, but a $5 donation is encouraged.
