Are we seeing more coyotes in Dallas, or is it just the algorithm?

I spoke with Dallas Animal Services Wildlife Investigator Officer Jacqueline Sutherland to get the facts on coyotes in Dallas. The most surprising insight? The number of sightings reported to the city hasn't necessarily increased—but social media makes it feel that way!

Here are the 3 key takeaways you need to know now:

It’s Teenager Season! Right now is Dispersal Season. The coyote pups born earlier this year are "teenagers" venturing out for the first time. They make "bad decisions" (like our own human teenagers!), leading to a spike in visible activity as they explore new areas.

Pet Alert: Keep Small Animals Close! Coyotes are not typically dangerous to people unless a resource is involved. However, they are a risk to small pets. Anything under 10 pounds that's fluffy (like Yorkies or Poodles) and cats are at high risk because they resemble natural prey. NEVER leave small pets unattended at night.

Your Report Matters! Every sighting—even a coyote running across a field—is valuable data. Officer Sutherland uses these reports to track territories, monitor animal health, and prevent problems before they escalate.

📱 How to Report a Coyote Sighting (It's Easy!):

Do NOT Google the number! Just dial 3-1-1 and when the automated menu starts, Press 3. This takes you directly to the coyote hotline voicemail.
