Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Friday the company will wind down production of its Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of 2027 to free up factory space and capacity for increased output of the Cybercab, Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi.
In a post on X, Musk wrote: “Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production.” Gigafactory Texas in Austin is the only Tesla plant that builds the Cybertruck and is equipped for its specialized components. Musk did not say whether production would move to another facility or end entirely, nor did he detail remaining order volumes or a firm end date.
The Cybertruck, Tesla’s stainless-steel electric pickup, launched in late 2023 after delays from its 2019 prototype reveal. It has faced slower-than-expected demand. While Tesla does not break out individual model sales, analyst estimates put total deliveries since launch well below the 250,000 units annually Musk once projected, with recent quarterly figures in the low tens of thousands at most.

Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill responded on X that the truck “was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab,” while affirming that Tesla will continue providing spare parts and service support for existing vehicles. He thanked contributors and owners.
The Cybercab is a two-seat autonomous vehicle without a traditional steering wheel or pedals. Production has already begun at the Texas plant, and Tesla has operated limited paid robotaxi rides in the Austin area. The shift aligns with Tesla’s broader focus on scaling autonomous ride-hailing and related technologies at the factory.
Existing Cybertruck owners are expected to retain service support under the statements from Morrill. Tesla has not issued further official details beyond the posts.
