She's inching closer and closer as Floridians are bracing for the worst. Helene became a Category 4 hurricane Thursday and is expected to bring record storm surge to Florida and flooding as far as the Appalachians.

Forecasters warned of surges of up to 15 to 20 feet in Florida, where Helene is expected to make landfall this evening. At least 14 American Red Cross volunteers from across the North Texas Region have answered the call to deploy to Florida in preparation for Hurricane Helene. These Red Crossers come from Abilene, Allen, Arlington, Bedford, Breckenridge, Dallas, Greenville, Justin, Terrell and Tyler, among others.

CEO Linda Braddy joined KRLD speaking in depth on the ways the American Red Cross answers the call to help others year-round and how North Texans can be part of their mission.

** NOTE: At the time of the audio recording, Hurricane Helene was a category 3 but later upgraded to a category 4.
