Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the popular online gaming platform of misleading parents about safety risks to children.
Paxton joined attorneys general from Kentucky and Louisiana, along with private plaintiffs, in alleging that Roblox has become a haven for child predators and sexual exploitation.
“Roblox must do more to protect kids from sick and twisted freaks hiding behind a screen,” Paxton said in a statement. “Any corporation that enables child abuse will face the full and unrelenting force of the law.”
The lawsuit mirrors similar claims filed against other online platforms. Paxton also sued ByteDance’s TikTok in January over alleged risks to young users.
In a statement, Roblox said it has strong safeguards in place to protect its users, including systems to identify and remove bad actors and parental controls that limit communication and access to content.
“We are disappointed that, rather than working collaboratively with Roblox on this industry-wide challenge and seeking real solutions, the AG has chosen to file a lawsuit based on misrepresentations and sensationalized claims,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
Roblox said that in 2024, about 40% of its daily active users were under age 13.
