Texas continues to see spike in COVID-19 cases; 13,000 reported Wednesday

Texas reported more than 13,000 new coronavirus cases Wednesday.

Stephen Love with the DFW Hospital Council tells KRLD the huge spike is due to the highly contagious Delta variant.

Love says one person with the Delta variant can infect up to 8 other people, so he says expects the number of new cases to continues to rise, which will mean more hospitalizations and more deaths. Love says wearing a mask is a good way to protect yourself and others.

He says there is great concern about the number of children becoming infected, especially since kids under age 12 cannot yet get a vaccine.

A vaccine for kids likely won't be available until the end of the year.
