An issue with the computer system at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles shut down offices across the state Friday. The issue was affecting the DMV's ability to file new registrations, renew registrations and search records.

The DMV made the announcement about 8 a.m. Friday, saying the problem was affecting both in-person and online services. The problem shut down all 16 offices across the state as well as registration renewal locations at grocery stores, dealerships and county tax offices.

“We will not be able to process any motor vehicle transactions today," Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector Wendy Burgess wrote in a statement. "We have just been informed by Texas Department of Motor Vehicles that the state computer system is expected to be down all day today, June 23. This outage affects all motor vehicle activities and will restrict our ability to provide estimates, search vehicle records, and process any transaction. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Burgess says Tarrant County residents should instead plan to visit the tax office Monday if they have a transaction to carry out.

But about 11 a.m., the DMV said its system was working again and its 16 regional service centers would reopen at 12 p.m. Friday. Service had also been restored at county tax offices and other car registration locations.

In an email to KRLD News, Texas DMV said the outage was not related to cybersecurity.
