The Texas Department of Public Safety is issuing several warnings for those traveling and staying home during the upcoming winter weather.

If you do not have to travel, stay home. DPS says to avoid traveling when sleet, freezing rain, or snow is predicted.

But if you have to, they have some advice.

"If you must drive in inclement weather, allow extra time to reach your destination," DPS said in a news release Tuesday. "Share your travel plans with a friend or family member so someone knows the route you're taking."

Drive slowly and allow plenty of space between your vehicle and others on the road.

Always have a full tank of gas, and do not use cruise control.

At home, keep space heaters three feet away from walls and combustibles.

Make sure your pipes are insulated and never heat your home with a gas stove or oven.

Freezing rain, sleet, and snow is possible Friday night into Saturday across North Texas with temperatures staying below freezing through Sunday.
