Texas lawmakers want legislative approval before universities change conferences

State lawmakers in Austin want to make sure the University of Texas doesn't leave the Big 12 conference.

Both Texas and University of Oklahoma recently notified Big 12 officials they are leaving the conference. Now, lawmakers in Austin are stepping up to make sure they stay where they are.

First a bill has been filed requiring legislative approval before universities change conferences.

Secondly Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has asked Senator Jane Nelson of Flower Mound to chair a new Select Committee on the Future of College Sports in Texas, to study the athletic and economic impact to the states schools and communities by UT’s exit from the Big 12.

The hearing is expected next Monday. The current legislative special session is still underway, but Democrats in the house remain in the nations capital keeping the house from a quorum and keeping anything from getting passed.
