Schools in Texas will begin having their security systems audited in September as part of a directive ordered by Governor Greg Abbott after the Uvalde shooting.
The Texas School Safety Center says all school districts and 75% of individual campuses will be inspected by the end of this school year.
The Texas School Safety Center is a research group at Texas State University. The organization works on research and training for schools and junior colleges.
Inspectors will not simulate active shooter situations, but they will test for weak points, like unlocked doors, and see how quickly they can get into buildings without being stopped.
Inspections will begin September 12. School districts will be told which month they will be inspected, but they will not know what day inspectors will arrive or which campus they are going to.
After the 2019 legislative session, the Texas School Safety Center says it created a "School Safety Readiness Team" to review districts' emergency operations plans. The organization says it also increased school-based law enforcement training.
