Texas Senator John Cornyn defeats challenger Hegar to win 4th term

US Senator John Cornyn held off Democratic challenger MJ Hegar Tuesday night to secure his 4th term in office. The nearly ten percent victory was his toughest re-election fight yet.

In his victory speech delivered over ZOOM, Cornyn said he was glad he had this fight, calling it "a fight for the soul of our nation and our state." Cornyn went on to speak of unifying the state. "Whether I earned your vote or whether you were pulling from my opponent, I'm honored and committed to serving and representing all Texans," said Cornyn. "My goal as your United States Senator is simple. Continue to make Texas a place of exceptional opportunity for all."

After calling Senator Cornyn to concede, MJ Hegar released the following statement:

"I'm not a career politician, running for U.S. Senate was never my plan. I'm just one of the millions of Texans who saw the world we're giving our children and thought 'hell no.' Together, we stood up and got to work, building a powerful grassroots campaign from the ground up, shattering voter turnout records, and most importantly sending a message to a previously safe Senator that he answers to us. I am confident that the work we did will move our state forward for years to come."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott was quick with his congratulations for Senator Cornyn. He sent out the following statement:

"Senator Cornyn ran an excellent campaign, and I want to congratulate him on a hard-fought victory," said Governor Abbott. "Senator Cornyn has a proven track record as a leader who will fight for the interests of all Texans in our nation's capital. He worked to provide Hurricane Harvey relief to Texans in need, combat human trafficking, and bring more jobs and economic prosperity to Texas. I know he will continue to be a powerful voice for Texans in the United States Senate."
