A woman taken to John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth because she was threatening suicide is now facing a murder charge in connection with the death of an unborn child.

The Tarrant County Sheriff's office says 39-year old Cheri Akil was restrained to a bed at JPS hospital when she somehow managed to get an arm free. Investigators say Akil punched a pregnant hospital staff member in the stomach. That worker went to trauma unit where doctors said the punch had killed the unborn child.

Akil has now been charged with murder.

Akil is still in the hospital in a secure area. She will be booked into the Tarrant County jail when she is released. She was arrested last week for minor offenses.

With this latest assault on a hospital worker, the Texas Nurses Association has been pushing for better hospital security.
