A surge of Thanksgiving holiday travelers is expected to hit Dallas–Fort Worth beginning Tuesday, marking one of the busiest travel weeks of the year across North Texas.

Transportation analysts say DFW freeways will see the heaviest congestion Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, with another major slowdown expected Sunday as travelers return home.

Nationwide, holiday travel is projected to reach record levels, and North Texas is positioned as one of the region’s busiest hubs due to major interstate corridors, large airport operations and growing population. The Texas Department of Transportation reports that peak delays typically form mid-afternoon and can last well into the evening as commuters and holiday travelers merge onto the same routes.

Airports across the region are also preparing for larger-than-normal crowds. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field have advised travelers to arrive early, anticipate full parking garages and plan around longer security lines.

Officials encourage drivers to leave early, build extra time into their travel plans and expect heavier-than-normal traffic through the end of the holiday weekend.
