Three Flower Mound police officers were shot during a stand-off at a home near Long Prairie Rd and Cross Timber Rd Wednesday night. The stand-off in the 2900 block of Termaine Dr. started about 7 p.m. when police say a woman went to a neighbor's home and called 911, saying her husband was suicidal.
"While officers were attempting a welfare check on the subject, at approximately 8:05 p.m., the suspect fired on them from inside the home, striking three Flower Mound police officers," says Flower Mound Police Chief Andy Kancel. "Officers did return fire before retreating to the perimeter."
Among the three officers who were hit:
An officer who was hit in his ballistic shield. He has been with Flower Mound police four years and was released from the hospital Wednesday night.
Another officer was hit in the neck, face and shoulder with bullet fragments. He has been with Flower Mound police 14 years and was released from the hospital Wednesday night.
The third officer was shot in the chest. Kancel says the officer's armor absorbed the impact, and the officer, who has been with the department 13 years, was not injured. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution and released.
"We're very blessed, and we're very thankful the injuries to the officers were not more severe," Kancel says. "We count our blessings for that, and certainly for the continued support from the public."
Houses nearby were evacuated during the stand-off when Kancel says the suspect shot through his front door at a robot taking video about 2:30 a.m. He says officers from the Flower Mound and Lewisville Police Departments had SWAT members at the home.
Kancel says the FBI also sent a SWAT team, who relieved officers from Flower Mound and Lewisville later in the morning.
"I just want to express how very proud I am of our team and how they responded," Kancel says. "They responded with patience and professionalism, and they took care of one another in this situation, a very critical and hazardous-type situation."
As the stand-off continued, people who live in the neighborhood started watching.
"Right before he surrendered, I came out, I was sitting right here, and I heard them shouting, 'Please come out. Get on your knees,'" one woman who lives about three blocks from the scene said.
Around 5:30 a.m., Kancel says the FBI "breached" the house and fired tear gas. He says the suspect, Bryan Hucabee, 60, surrendered peacefully.
"With patience and professionalism, we averted a great tragedy tonight," he says.
Hucabee was treated at the scene by the Flower Mound Fire Department for exposure to tear gas. He was then taken to the hospital for observation.
Hucabee has been charged with three counts of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and Flower Mound police say additional charges are pending.
