Not only did Metallica provide a great show for hundreds of thousands of rock and roll fans, but a trio of charities will reap the benefits.
Through its All Within My Hands Foundation, Metallica used the occasion of their AT&T Stadium shows to donate $100,000 to three charities, including two based in Tarrant County.
The heavy metal band donated $35,000 each to the Tarrant Area Food Bank and to the Center for Transforming Lives.
"We are just absolutely thrilled that they selected Tarrant Area Food Bank for their donation," says Julie Butner, Tarrant Area Food Bank CEO. "It's going to provide about 18,000 pounds of food, which is about 16,000 meals for families in our 13-county area."
Volunteers gathered in Arlington and packed the food.
"We had over 35 people come out on Saturday, and they represented fan clubs of Metallica from places outside of DFW," Butner says. "We had a fan club from Mexico, (and) we had another fan club from Wisconsin."
Butner says the timing of the donation couldn't be any better.
"As we're coming off of summer break and getting kids and families back into school, we do a lot of back to school and mega mobiles, and this helps to fund that," says Butner.
The Center for Transforming Lives, meanwhile, is a Fort Worth-based organization that aims to break the cycle of poverty throughout Tarrant County.
The donation caught the organization completely by surprise.
"We both just kind of freaked out over a Zoom call like, 'Metallica wants to give us a donation for their concert,'" says Matthew Marchbanks, director of communications for the Center for Transforming Lives, referring to his conversation with the organization's director. "We couldn't believe it. But apparently they found us online and they liked what they saw on our website, and so we were absolutely overjoyed and in disbelief."
The remaining $30,000 went to the Farmlink Project, which delivers surplus produce to food banks across the country.
