Sheriff addressing the media Friday in connection with shooting death of a deputy and fire that claimed five lives

In an emotional press conference, Van Zandt County Sheriff Kevin Bridger and Captain Brandon Kilpatrick provided updates following a tragic sequence of events that has left the local community grieving.

Deadly Shootout Claims Life of Deputy

On the night of Tuesday, October 20, Van Zandt County Deputy Adam Al-Sharifi was killed in the line of duty while assisting the Canton Police Department in serving two felony warrants.

Around 10:22 PM, as officers attempted contact, a suspect inside the residence opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle, unleashing over 800 rounds at responding officers.

During the heavy exchange of gunfire:

  • Deputy Adam Al-Sharifi was fatally wounded. He leaves behind a wife, two young children, and a newborn baby.
  • Canton Police Officer Chris Watson was severely injured and remains in recovery.
  • Deputy Brandon Fontenot was commended for his heroic actions during the ambush, administering lifesaving aid to Officer Watson and providing covering fire to allow fellow deputies and DPS officers to extract the wounded officer to safety.

The suspect was later found deceased inside the home. The Texas Rangers are leading the ongoing investigation.

Devastating House Fire Strikes Sheriff’s Office Family

Compounding the heartbreak, a separate house fire broke out in the county during the response to the shooting. The fire tragically took the lives of a 27-year-old mother and four children.

The victims were closely tied to the law enforcement family: the mother was the daughter of a Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office investigator, and the four young children were his grandchildren.

A Community United in Grief

Visibly shaken, Sheriff Bridger expressed deep grief for the fallen officers, victims, and their families, praising the bravery of first responders and thanking neighboring agencies—including Henderson, Smith, Kaufman, and Rusk counties—for their overwhelming support.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office asks the community to keep the families of Deputy Al-Sharifi, Officer Watson, and the investigator's family in their prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
